JESÚS ATIENZA PHOTOS
Enjoy the exhibition from May 2nd to 9th
The puppet is an instrument that comes to life activated by an actor. From a flesh and bone Hamlet, to a cardboard Hamlet there is a path that borders the precipice. The puppet is a corpse that with its motionless face has to make the public feel that it is capable of smiling or shuddering.
The puppeteer has very few seconds to achieve this miracle. The puppet photographer has even less. A thousandth of a second after the click, the puppet will be dead again. Catching a burst of life requires skill and virtuosity. Hundreds of excellent photographers capture formidable colours and suggestions, but they do not capture the vital ray of a puppet.
Jesús Atienza has lived with puppets and puppeteers since 1977, when, looking for Harry V. Tozer's puppets, he found Pepe Otal's puppets, and from that moment, he travelled with the puppeteers in their own vans, ate, and slept with them and their puppets. All over Catalonia, all over Spain and a big part of Europe.
In 1978, he founded, with the team of his teacher Albert Guspi, the International Center of Photography of Barcelona, the CIFB. There, with the best photographers in the world, he learned to photograph the world. He chose social photography, not plastic photography. Moreover, within the social sphere, Atienza opted for what was most linked to life and death: the circus, tattoos, and puppets.
The puppet is attached to its animator by a power cable. Photographing this synergy is within the reach of very few photographers. And, among them, Jesús Atienza documents the most tender or enigmatic times, people, spaces and looks between creator and created, with a precision that borders on fright. In addition, he does it as a notary who carefully testifies to it, but who also attests to the voluptuous breaths of the puppet and the puppeteer.
Exhibition schedule: from Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm Sunday, from 10am to 2pm
Place: La Paeria
Price: Free

SCULPTURES AND PUPPETS

It is a project that was born with the desire to make known and empower young artists and the Ondara school, in the cultural world within the Puppet Fair.
The works will be exhibited from May 3 to 10, 2023, at the lobby of Teatre Escorxador.
PUPPET MOTION
For a few years now, some puppet, object and shadow companies have made the leap to the big screen and have produced films and short films, in which puppets and objects are the protagonists.
The Fair has always been close to these productions, presenting animated short films and movie premieres. In this edition, we reopen this cinematographic window to once again bring professionals and the public closer to short films in which puppets and objects are the main actors.
