The paradoxes revealed in Gogol's work find correspondences with our delirious contemporary world: the confused relationship between "being" and "appearing" (virtual identities, social class identity), the loss of reference points between the true and the false (fake news, identity of advertising origin, fashion, etc...) and a need to escape from fiction worlds in front of an oppressive or confusing reality.
